PAT FAWCETT
A message from The Council:
It is with deep sadness that we have to announce the death of our former Leader, colleague and friend, Cllr Pat Fawcett, who passed away in the early hours of Saturday 28th April 2012 after her brave battle with cancer.
Cllr Fawcett was a Corby Councillor for over 12 years and a true supporter of the Borough, her love and dedication to Corby was truly second to none. The Union Flag is flying at half mast outside the Corby Cube as a sign of respect, also a book of condolence will be available at the helpdesk on the ground floor of the Corby Cube from this week for people to sign and pass on their messages to Pat’s family.
Leader of Corby Borough Council, Cllr Tom Beattie, said: ‘I am deeply saddened to hear the news of Pat’s passing. Pat was a dear friend and colleague and I will personally miss the advice and support that she always freely gave. I think that I speak on behalf of all of Corby Borough Council when I say that Pat Fawcett was a true inspiration and a wonderful advocate for Corby. We will all miss her greatly and our thoughts at this time are with Pat’s family.’
Acting Chief Executive of Corby Borough Council, Norman Stronach, said: ‘Pat served the Council and the people of Corby well as both a local councilor and Leader. She oversaw many positive changes in the borough and was a great advocate for Corby. She was always very appreciative and supportive of the efforts of all officers. It was a true pleasure to work with her and she will be sadly missed.’
Cllr Fawcett was born in Scotland and moved to the Lake District when taking up residential work with Scope and then made her way to Corby in 1969. Councillor Fawcett became a Councillor for the first time in May 1999 representing the Hillside Ward and was re-elected in 2003 as Councillor for the Lloyds Ward which she has been representing ever since.
After a time as Deputy Leader, Pat became Leader of the Council in January 2005 and led the Borough through some of its most challenging and exciting times, spearheading the huge regeneration plans and encouraging the vision of a bigger, better, brighter Borough.
As a Councillor, Pat represented the Council on the Board of North Northamptonshire Development Company, East Midlands Arts Council and most recently the European Regional Development Fund Board. As well as politics, her love for Corby’s community and helping people led her in to her earlier Social Services and voluntary youth work through which she worked with many children and families in the town.
Leader of Corby Borough Council’s Conservative Group, Cllr David Sims, said: ‘It is very sad news. Pat worked very hard on her ward and it was a pleasure to work with her. We had different views sometimes but she was always prepared to listen. She worked tirelessly to represent the people of Corby and will be missed by the whole of the Borough. I would like to offer my condolences and deepest sympathies to her family and friends.’
Leader of Corby Borough Council’s Liberal Democrat Group, Cllr Chris Stanbra, said: ‘Pat was a fighter with her own distinctive style who stood up for Corby and its people. In all my dealings with her she was firm but fair; always approachable and good humoured. She will be sadly missed’
